Cruelty Free Cosmetics

Monday, April 19th, 2010

When I first started buying makeup, I never really thought about animal testing. I guess I was naïve to the fact that animal testing even existed for cosmetics. I’ve always thought that animal testing was pointless, and as soon as I really got into makeup, I started to make sure that I bought products not tested on animals.

After doing some research into brands online, I discovered that MAC is not tested on animals! I went and spent $1000 on the stuff when I was visiting the states. I remember the first time I applied the Prep & Prime to my lashes – I got some in my eye and it burned more than any makeup or eye product ever has before! Since then, I’ve managed to keep the stuff out of my eye, but I remember thinking at the time that the burn was a good sign, because my clumsiness was the only thing that had caused me to be in such pain, as opposed to animal testing. I thought that the pain was worth it and that I’d not want a poor rabbit to have to have things put in its eyes in order to allow me to be a clumsy oaf! I am perfectly happy with this primer for my eyes, it’s the best I’ve ever had! I’ll never change brands. Animal testing didn’t contribute to how well the product works, and it shouldn’t need to contribute to how well any product works.

It’s not hard to look for an alternative brand to help stop cosmetic animal testing. Sure, it may take some asking around, but I ended up finding my favourite brand through researching cruelty free makeup! :)

Go Cruelty Free
Uncaged (I got the lists here from that page.)

Please note that the accuracy of this list may not be agreed upon by every website or person out there. Different people hold different standards between what is and isn’t a company that tests on animals. For example, some people may consider a company “cruelty free” because they only test products on animals that are required to by law. However, I still feel that that is wrong, as the company could avoid marketing any product with ingredients that are required by law to test on animals.
